Survival usages:
- A sweet drinkable sap can be extract from the tree and needs no purification.
- The bark can be used to make canoes or containers.
- Bark can also be used as fire-starters, even when damp.
- A tea can be made from the small twigs.
- The tinder fungas, chaga, grows exclusively on the white birch tree and is one of the only natural materials that will take a spark from flint and steel.
- Pine tar can be extracted form the bark and makes a brilliant natural adhesive.
American Basswood

The American Basswood, also known as American Linden, is a very common tree especially in eastern America. They prefer to grow at creeks and streams and it is not uncommon to see clumps of shoots growing at the base of the tree. The Basswood have large, heart-shaped toothed leaves and during summer nut-like fruits can be found in the center of the leaves.
