  • Acorns can be grounded, after leaching out the tannic acid, to make acorn bread.
  • The tannic acid is anti-bacterial and can be used as an antiseptic wash.
  • Acorns can be used as trap bait for small game animals.
  • Tannic acid can be used to tan leather.
  • The dried white oak flowers can be used as tinder bundles.

Maple Tree

Maple Trees are plentiful in the Eastern woodlands and every fall the leaves change into red, orange and yellow.  The leaves have five lobes and their tips are pointed and the young tree have smooth silvery bark.  The Maple Tree flower in late winter and early spring and have “helicopter like” seeds and the Sugar Maple is the source of maple syrup.  Interesting to know is that it takes 40 gallons of sugar maple to make 1 gallon of maple syrup.

Survival usages:

  • In late winter and early spring drinkable sap can be extracted from the tree and needs no purification. The sap is rich in sugar and nutrients.  Since the Maple tree sheds it’s leaves it is important to learn how to identify this tree in every season.
  • The helicopter like seeds are edible, boiled or fried.
  • Young maple leaves are edible.

 

Willow Tree

There are various varieties of willows and they will be found close to a water source.  Their leaves are narrow and lance-shaped.

Survival usages:

  • The bark contains a chemical called salicin and has the ability to relieve headaches and inflammation. The sap can be extracted by chewing on a small twig.
  • During spring and summer the bark can be peeled away and used as cordage.
  • Young willow branches are flexible and can be used to weave baskets and funnel traps.
  • Dried willow wood can be used for a friction set.
  • Willow saplings make excellent frog and fish gigs.
