Making Your Own Log Furniture Can Be A Great Hobby

Have you ever consider the idea to make your own log furniture?  This style of furniture is rustic and beautiful and it gives you the opportunity to get really creative.  You can build anything from a good piece of stripped lumber and the benefit of furniture of this kind it can last for many years to come.

The first step is to select the right logs for the furniture.  If you choose to work with green wood and let it dry before you make the furniture the bark can be peeled while still green. Spring is the best time to do this providing you have access to a kiln.

Dry wood have naturally appearing cracks and it should not be a problem as long as they are positioned correctly when building the furniture.  Kiln drying wood produces far less cracking than air drying but can be restrictive in availability and price. When using air dry wood it is important to know that the moisture content should be less than 16% before using it for furniture.

Fire killed trees are probably the best alternative for quite a few reasons. Firstly, you did not use a healthy live tree to make furniture and secondly when a fire goes through a forest the rotten trees are killed off and it is only the healthy trees which will remain and they will dry out perfectly.
