Want To Survive Like A Bushcraft Master? He’ll Show You How

Somewhere deep in the Porcupine Hills — emphasis on somewhere — I gather sticks and stones to build a fire. I’m hungry. Cold. And need some shelter. I check my phone and it appears that I do not have an app for this situation. Of course, given my remote location, my phone is basically useless. Perhaps I can “MacGyver it” into some sort of flying spaceship to retrieve Mozza Burgers from the A&W in Fort Macleod. But, unfortunately, the only thing I’ve ever invented is a bad recipe for beet borscht, so this is highly unlikely. Here’s the reality: I’m hunkered down in a remote region where wind-hammered ridges, strange plant life, and carnivorous animals are rampant. The weather has suddenly turned for the worse. And I need to rely on my bushcraft skills. Here’s the problem: I don’t have any.
Rewind the clock a century, or two, and anyone living in — or moving through — this part of the world would have to have MacGyver-like bushcraft skills to make it. Survival, in them days, depended on your ability to forage, find water, shelter, and protect yourself from injury, the elements, and big furry critters that would like to eat you like borscht.
Bushcraft, of which wilderness survival in emergency situations is a key component, actually began with Adam. (But, if I remember the story correctly, his skills were also not very good as evidenced by him totally eating the wrong thing.) At any rate, the craft of surviving, and thriving, in the wild is certainly still alive and well today.

Interestingly, this past April, Kochanski was also was hired to consult on the set of the soon-to-be-released movie, The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. “They paid me a healthy sum of money to make sure the main character, played by DiCaprio, was foraging for the right types of food, and so forth. In the movie he has to travel a few hundred kilometres through the wilderness, severely injured, so there are a number of scenes that involve bushcraft skills.”
